Who Is Considered a Vulnerable Adult?

A vulnerable adult may include:

• Individuals over the age of 60 years with functional, mental or physical inability to care for themselves
• Individuals with developmental or other qualified disabilities

Washington law protects vulnerable adults against abuse, neglect and financial exploitation.  Abuse can include physical, sexual, or mental abuse; unreasonable confinement; and willful abandonment.

If you suspect a vulnerable adult is being abused or neglected in Washington, you can report it to Adult Protective Services (APS) at 1-877-734-6277.  Reports to APS are anonymous.

Legal Options for Protection

• Emergency court orders, including Vulnerable Adult Protection Orders
• Legal action against abusers or exploiters 
• Coordination with Adult Protective Services
